The western states of the Republic of India make up the ill-defined area known as Western India. In addition to the Union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, the Western division comprises the states of Goa, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Some historians also include the state of Rajasthan in this division.
In addition, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and southern Punjab are occasionally included. The term “Western India” can also apply to the western portion of India, which includes Punjab, Kerala, and the states immediately around Delhi and Chennai. There are many people living in cities in this heavily industrialized region.
The Vindhya Range to the east and north, the Thar Desert to the north, and the Arabian Sea to the west roughly delineate the borders of Western India. Western India shares the Deccan Plateau with South and Central India, and a large chunk of the Thar Desert with North India and Pakistan.
